TOPIC
The New Periodontal Classification: current concepts from diagnosis to management.
Course Outline and Educational Objectives:
The 2017 World Workshop Periodontal Classification System which is a redesigned disease classification framework will be reviewed. It guides comprehensive treatment planning and allows for a more personalized approach to patient care. The added concept of the staging and grading system will be demystified allowing us to improve our understanding of the disease process and better the management of the both periodontal and peri-implant diseases. Various cases will be studied to apply newly learned concepts of diagnosis and treatment planing.
In the second part of the program, we will discuss the latest advances to improve the outcome of various periodontal procedures. The world of periodontics is growing fast and there are a multitude of newer techniques designed to facilitate and improve outcomes from various lasers, to new surgical tools, to a variety of materials and sutures. New research points toward the clinical advantages of combining regenerative procedures with platelet-rich fibrin (PRF). It finds varied applications in dentistry including management of gingival recession, vertical and horizontal ridge augmentation, and bone regeneration in periodontal and peri-implant bone defects. It has now evolved to become one of the most widely used platelet concentrate in dentistry. We will aim to better understand the clinical procedures where PRF may be utilized to enhance tissue/bone formation.
Various procedures will be described in detail such as atraumatic extractions, minimally invasive root coverage procedures, predictable ridge preservation and augmentation and defect regeneration around teeth and implants.
The emphasis will be on presenting practical concepts of flap management and material manipulation and to introduce new instrumentation which can facilitate periodontal surgery and maximize outcomes. This program is sure to be of value whether you have an interest in learning new periodontal surgical tricks or if you just want to be aware of what can be done today in the world of regeneration.
