Essentials of sedation for dentistry
Course Description
This seminar will offer a review of practical, safe, and commonly used in office “sedation” modalities by most practitioners. What do we need to know to be as safe as possible? We will cover when a special permit is necessary and the pros, cons, risks, objectives of oral sedation, nitrous oxide, local anesthesia, deep sedation, general anesthesia, and care in the hospital. Both pediatric and adult patient issues will be discussed.
Course Objectives
- How to decide which patients are appropriate for sedation or general anesthesia and how to treat or refer them.
- What are the critical areas to focus on for a proper patient assessment?
- Explain the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the most commonly used anxiolytic drugs in dental practice.
- Demonstrate how to do an airway assessment, and explain the implications for the sedated patient
- List the monitors required or recommended for sedation and explain how their data is important.
- What are some common reported mishaps that lead to morbidity? How are they avoided and/or treated?

Oral Pathology – A refresher
Synopsis
Oral Pathology, while important, is easily forgettable and may be infrequently encountered in the dental practice. This sets the stage for misdiagnosis and mismanagement with the potential to negativity effect patient morbidity and mortality as well as medico-legal ramifications. Attendees will gain confidence in identifying oral precancerous and cancers lesions and managing common oral pathologies.
Objectives:
Part I. Suspicious Oral lesions
- To review trends of oral cancer including new risk factors.
- To recognize clinical features of oral precancer/cancer.
- To review proper documentation and an approach for a differential diagnosis.
- To discuss how and when to refer
Part II. Commonly encountered oral ulcerative lesions
- To review a diagnostic approach for oral ulcerative lesions.
- To discuss the diagnosis and management of commonly encountered lesions(including aphthous stomatitis, lichen planus).

Oral Cancer : The Journey and the Role of the Dentist
Synopsis
Dentists will commonly encounter patients with a history of cancer and it is essential that they understand the modifications necessary for proper dental management. This lecture will review the management of head and neck malignancies and examine the dentist’s role in all phases.
Lecture Objectives
- To review the management and patient experience of the head and neck cancer parient.
- To discuss the role of the dentist in all phases of care(pre-, peri- and post-cancer care).
