Summary
Dentists treat patients with pain on a daily basis with the most common pain sources being dental caries and periodontal disease. Dentists are uniquely trained to manage these complaints and do so with great success due to their extensive training and knowledge of the anatomy and function of the trigeminal system and the structures innervated by this complex and unique cranial nerve. However, dentists should be cognizant of the many other reasons as to why patients present with pain to dental offices. Therefore, the need for a broader understanding and appreciation of less common pain sources and recognition of its consequences is essential in the dental armamentarium for appropriate diagnosis and management. During the last several decades there has been an explosion in evidence-based scientific knowledge regarding these matters. This course will provide the dentist with foundational knowledge toward an understanding of various pain disorders and factors related to their diagnosis and management.
