DAY 3: 22 Jan – Nairobi

  • Breakfast at the hotel
  • Today you get to explore Kenya’s vibrant capital city, Nairobi. After a hearty breakfast, you will proceed to Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. This centre has played a significant role in Kenya’s conservation efforts. The baby elephants are brought from the national park for a mud-bath at the orphanage, where for an hour (i.e. 1100hrs – 1200hrs) you can get close to them and sometimes touch them. You may not feed the animals but will get a chance to view the handlers feeding them. The orphanage offers hope for any orphaned baby elephant fortunate enough to be found alive and so far, it is proud to have saved over 150 orphaned infant elephants, which would otherwise have perished. The baby elephants are raised at the orphanage with the intention of gradually reintegrating them into the wild. The age range of the elephants can vary from a few months to three years. Each elephant is assigned to its own keeper, who acts as a surrogate mother and will stay with the elephant until it is released back into the wild.
  • Thereafter, you will visit the renowned Giraffe Centre, where you will be given a rare opportunity to get up close to these gentle giants in this natural sanctuary, which was founded to protect the endangered Rothschild giraffe. Here you are able to climb to the top of a platform and stand eye to eye with the giraffes and feed them with small pellets. You may even be lucky to get a sloppy “kiss” from a friendly giraffe.
  • After the Giraffe Centre, enjoy lunch out on the gardens of the FAMOUS Karen Blixen Tamambo Restaurant, situated at the foot of the Ngong Hills. The garden was originally part of the home of the infamous Danish author, Karen Blixen of the Out of Africa fame.
  • Return to the hotel for some relaxation time until it is time for the seminar.
  • SEMINAR 2 PM TO 5 PM
  • Tonight, dinner is out and you will be transferred to the world famous Carnivore Restaurant for a welcome feast. The restaurant is famous for its succulent steaks and barbecue dishes and four choices of game meat roasted over charcoal and served at your table.
  • Return to your hotel for overnight.
  • Accommodation: Fairmont The Norfolk Hotel
  • Meals: breakfast, dinner

DAY 4: 23 Jan – Nairobi / Masai Mara Game Reserve – flight

  • Breakfast at the hotel
  • Check out and transfer to the Wilson Airport for your flight to the Masai Mara National Reserve. It is perhaps the only region left in Kenya where the visitor may see animals in the same super-abundance as existed a century ago. You will be treated to a Masai welcome upon arrival. Thereafter, proceed with our guide drivers to the camp; enjoy a game viewing drive enroute.
  • Arrive at your lodge in time for lunch and some relaxation time at the camp.
  • In the afternoon you will proceed on your first proper game viewing drive in this vast and expansive reserve teeming with game. Masai Mara Game Reserve is famous for her big five; the most sought after in the early 20th century, when Kenya was a hunters’ paradise. The Big Five include the lion, Cape buffalo, the savanna elephant, black rhino and the elusive leopard. The vast savanna grasslands as far as the eye can see is home to impalas, Maasai giraffes, waterbucks, warthogs, Thompson & grand gazelles, topis, the resident wildebeests’ among many others.
  • Dinner at your camp.
  • Accommodation: Fairmont Mara Safari Club
  • Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 5: 24 Jan – Masai Mara Game Reserve

  • Today, you will get a very early wake-up call.
  • After coffee or tea and a few cookies, head out into the bush since wildlife is most active in the early morning.
  • You will be accompanied by your skilled guides through the bush for 3-4 hours searching for wildlife and learning about animal behavior and the environment around you.
  • Head back to the camp where you will have a hearty breakfast.
  • The rest of the morning provides you time to relax and, perhaps, record your morning’s adventures in your safari journal or join one of the guides on a camp walk.
  • Lunch will be enjoyed onsite at the camp.
  • SEMINAR TODAY 10 AM TO 1 PM
  • After lunch, you can remain in your tented camp enjoying the surrounding landscape. You can take a nap, or do some reading.
  • After a well-deserved rest, you will venture back into the bush with your guide. Your afternoon game drive provides the opportunity to witness the bush in action. You’ll spend some time watching the wildlife and exploring the vast savannah further and as you continue to tick off wildlife on your mammal and bird lists. As the sun sinks lower in the sky and conditions begin to cool, gaze at the vivid African sunset. Enjoy sundowners at a scenic spot with selected drinks served under an acacia tree. Afterward, you’ll be whisked back to camp for dinner and a gathering around a campfire with the Maasai.
  • Also visit a traditional Masai Manyatta (off the beaten track) and experience the culture of this world famous community. The Masai still live as they did for centuries -interact with these nomadic people and experience their way of life as you learn about their customs and traditions.
  • Accommodation: Fairmont Mara Safari Club
  • Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

OPTIONAL ACTIVITY: Today’s adventure begins just before dawn. Flames from the hot air balloon burners light the darkness as the crew inflate their craft. The first, pink tongues of sunlight flicker across the skies and the hot air balloon fills then rises. Suspended in a basket beneath the rainbow-coloured canopy, you’re off for a game-viewing adventure with an entirely different perspective. Apart from the occasional hiss of the burners, a lion’s roar, elephants crashing through the bush, baboons perched in the tips of the trees startled and screeching to see something above them, the flight above the Masai Mara plains is magically silent. At the end of the flight, the passengers are treated to a champagne breakfast in the bush. The finishing touch to the flight is a game drive back to the camp, and the possibility of seeing the same pride of lions, or herd of elephants that had been viewed while ballooning. A flight certificate is issued on completion of the balloon safari. Back at Camp enjoy a sumptuous lunch and a well-deserved rest.

DAY 6: 25 Jan – Masai Mara Game Reserve

  • AMKA! Wake Up, it’s another early start.
  • After a cup of coffee or tea and some snacks, you will proceed on a morning game viewing drive. Be on the look-out for any of the Big Five that may have eluded you on your previous game drives. You may even be so lucky to witness a leopard or a cheetah sprint and make a kill!
  • Return back to the camp for breakfast and some time at leisure at the camp.
  • After lunch, you will partake in a seminar session.
  • SEMINAR 2 PM TO 5 PM
  • This evening, you will be treated to an exciting dining experience on the Masai Mara plains. The bush dinner will commence with the setting of the sun. To make it an unforgettable African dining experience, a group of local Maasai men and women sing and dance providing background entertainment that blends with the sounds of the untamed bush. By the light of the flickering embers of a wood fire, sit back, relax and soak up the final minutes of what will be yet another day full of adventure.
