SPEAKER
Dr. David Isen

TOPIC
Part 1: Current Concepts in Local Anesthesia
Part 2: Medical Emergency Review: How to Avoid and Manage a Medical Emergency in a Health-Care Setting

Most dentists will inject a local anesthetic hundreds of times every year, most often with success. However, there are times when administering a local anesthetic fails. Why does this happen?

In Part 1 of this seminar, we will review modern concepts in local anesthesia as they pertain to anatomy, pharmacology and armamentarium.   The latest research, as well as the newest products available to dentistry will be highlighted. Specific topics to explore include calculating toxicity in children, the safety and efficacy of articaine, new products such as buffering systems, a local anesthetic antidote and intranasal delivery. All of this will tie in to how we can deliver the most effective and comfortable local anesthetic injections.

In Part 2, we will review aspects of medical emergency response including patient assessment, medical emergency drugs and managing specific emergencies such as syncope, myocardial infarction, angina, stroke, asthma and other common emergencies. We will address the problem that studies show health-care practitioners forget some aspects of Basic Life Support training only a few months after being taught by learning an easy-to-remember mnemonic that can apply to any medical emergency.

Lecture Objectives:

The learning objectives for Part 1 of this course are to bring the participants up to speed with respect to the most current concepts in dental local anesthesia.  This information will be presented so that the listener will be able to incorporate these ideas into their practices.  Topics such as, local anesthetic pharmacology, relevant anatomy, drug interactions, toxicity, and the newest delivery systems will be taught.

The lecture objectives for Part 2 of this seminar are to teach medical emergency care in a dental office and to allow the listener to incorporate this information into their treatment settings.  The goal is to help enhance the safety of a dental visit.
