TOPIC
Oral Pathology Masterclass: Emerging Trends and Best Practices
(6 hours of this are CORE 1 CE – Topics on Oral Cancer)
Course Overview
Oral medicine and pathology, while highly important, is also highly forgettable. One misstep may have a significant impact on the well-being of the patient let alone the medico-legal ramifications. This course will address several topics in oral medicine and pathology that are either new, commonly encountered or detrimental if forgotten.
Part I. Commonly encountered oral lesions
This course will review the most commonly encountered oral lesions. Key learning objectives are:
- Learn how to properly document any abnormal findings and formulate a differential diagnosis.
- Learn how to recognize the common oral lesions and learn their contemporary management.
Part II. Errors and Pitfalls in Oral Pathology
This course will serve as a review of oral precancerous and cancerous lesions with an emphasis on the commonly encountered errors that give rise to medico-legal complications. Key learning objectives are:
- Learn how to perform a proper head and neck examination.
- Learn when and how to refer.
- Learn how to recognize and manage oral precancerous and cancerous lesions.
Part III. Dental pain that is not dental
This course will review non-odontogenic pain that masquerades as a tooth ache. These disorders often frustrate the dentist (and patient) and give rise to unnecessary treatments. Key learning objectives are:
- Learn features that should raise suspicion for non-odontogenic pain.
- Learn how these pain disorders are diagnosed and managed.
Benefits of Attending
- Topics in orofacial pain will be reviewed (including temporomandibular joint disorders and non-odontogenic toothaches) and attendees will learn a practical diagnostic approach and review contemporary, evidence-based management.
- The most common oral lesions (eg. lichen planus, aphthous stomatitis) will be discussed; attendees will develop comfort with their diagnosis and management.
- Precancerous oral lesions will be reviewed and attendees will learn which lesions may be potentially life-threatening and cannot be missed. Attendees will learn how to perform a comprehensive head and neck exam and document oral lesions. Diagnostic pitfalls and medico-legal ramifications will be discussed.
- The evolution of oral cancer treatment will be reviewed with a focus on the patient-experience. Attendees will learn of the dentist’s role (pre-, intra- and post-cancer care).
- HPV oral and oropharyngeal HPV-mediated diseases will be examined with a focus on the dentist’s role in diagnosis, education and prevention (as a vaccine provider).
