Benefits of Attending
Oral medicine and oral pathology is highly important but also highly forgettable especially when not encountered daily. This sets the stage for mismanagement that may harm the patient. This bootcamp will be practice – addressing those topics that are either commonly encountered in the general dental setting or potentially life-threatening if missed.
- Topics in orofacial pain will be reviewed (including temporomandibular joint disorders and non-odontogenic toothaches) and attendees will learn a practical diagnostic approach and review contemporary, evidence-based management.
- The most common oral lesions (eg. lichen planus, aphthous stomatitis) will be discussed; attendees will develop comfort with their diagnosis and management.
- Precancerous oral lesions will be reviewed and attendees will learn which lesions may be potentially life-threatening and cannot be missed. Attendees will learn how to perform a comprehensive head and neck exam and document oral lesions. Diagnostic pitfalls and medico-legal ramifications will be discussed.
- The evolution of oral cancer treatment will be reviewed with a focus on the patient-experience. Attendees will learn of the dentist’s role (pre-, intra- and post-cancer care).
- HPV oral and oropharyngeal HPV-mediated diseases will be examined with a focus on the dentist’s role in diagnosis, education and prevention (as a vaccine provider).
