Educational Objectives:
- Participants will have a better understanding of the etiology, clinical presentation and management of a wide range of commonly occurring oral lesions and mucocutaneous diseases. Review the basics of a cancer screening examination as well as a discussion of new systems to assist dental offices in screening for oral cancer.
- A review of the impact of systemic diseases on the development of xerostomia and erosive destruction of the teeth as well as the possible interplay between oral disease and systemic conditions.
- Recent changes in many Canadian Provinces have raised the expectations of dental offices with respect to infection control and record keeping. This program will allow participants the opportunity to evaluate the current status and correct possible deficiencies.
- Review the use of antibiotics, analgesics and current local anaesthetics; discussing the use of these medications and their appropriateness in clinical practice.
Benefits of attending:
- While principles of Oral Medicine/Oral Pathology are emphasized in the assisting, hygiene and dental curriculums the specific conditions are often forgotten due to their relative rarity in general practice. This program will give the assistant, hygienist and dentist the chance to review this interesting and important area of dental practice.
- The mouth is said to be the mirror of the patient. The patients’ systemic health impact dramatically on the health of the oral cavity and in some instances the health of the oral cavity impacts on systemic health. In some cases changes in the oral cavity will lead to the early diagnosis of significant diseases providing an improved prognosis.
- With patients becoming more litigious this update on current guidelines regarding infection control, record keeping and informed consent will give participants the knowledge to protect themselves should a patient complain to a regulatory body.
- The information presented over this 12 hour program is pertinent to all members of the dental care team and will be implemented the first week back at work.
