Topic: A Little Bit of Everything in Non-surgical Periodontal Therapy Peri-implantitis ; 8 – 9 hours

Course Description
Inflammatory periodontal diseases are multifactorial in nature. While bacterial biofilm is necessary, many other risk factors contribute to the expression of disease and destruction of the attachment apparatus. This presentation will outline the concept of etiology, risk, local and systemic factors that may influence the disease trajectory, chronic inflammation, and the relationship between oral and systemic health. Mechanical and chemotherapeutic approaches to periodontal disease management will be reviewed. A synopsis of the emerging issues around implant survivability will also be presented. Over 38 years of clinical experiences will be shared.

Participants in this course will be able to:
• Identify  local  & systemic risk factors for periodontal diseases & implement management strategies to eliminate or these factors.
• Design & implement a cause-related nonsurgical treatment plan to control inflammatory periodontitis.
• Explain relationship between chronic periodontal inflammation & systemic disease.
• Identify etiologies & treatment strategies for peri-implant mucositis & peri-implantitis

 

Topic: Treatment Planning the Complex Perio-Restorative Patient ; 2 hours

There is more to aesthetic dentistry than properly contoured and color-matched restorations. Often, the perio-restorative interface is the key to achieving a pleasing result for the patient. This course will explore some of the theories of beauty as they relate to dentistry, then detail one form of aesthetic exam, and then present a series of aesthetic challenges and their solutions.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
• Apply mathematical formulas to the aesthetic zone.
• Perform a comprehensive aesthetic examination.
• Identify a variety of aesthetic challenges and their solutions including
-Gingival recession and soft tissue grafting;
-Ridge defects and management;
-Altered passive eruption and aesthetic crown lengthening.

 

Topic: International Volunteer Dental Projects. What’s It All About Anyway? ; 2 hours

Synopsis:
This course is designed for dentists, dental hygienists, and other interested parties who want to learn more about the nuts and bolts of volunteering around the world or around the block. It will also be useful for those with some volunteering experience looking for new ideas or just validation of what they are doing. Topics include the nature of volunteer activities, cross-cultural issues, comparison of service and teaching projects, how to get started either at home or abroad, the nuts and bolts of volunteering overseas and at home, and where to find these volunteer opportunities. There will be ample time for interaction with the presenters and other experienced members of the audience.
This course is for dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, and other volunteer team members.

Course Objectives:
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
• identify why they are interested in volunteering;
• understand the importance of working within the context of the local community;
• compare and contrast the nature of teaching and service projects with advantages & disadvantages of each type;
• outline the steps necessary to get started including needs assessment, goal setting, and team assembly;
• describe the nuts and bolts of volunteering including what to do and resources to support the project;
• find volunteer projects and other sources of information; and
• appreciate existing projects, both teaching and service, both in the US and overseas.
